Zach Bauchou Leads Bank of Utah Championship With Career-Best 62

Jordan Smith’s closing albatross put him among nine players a shot behind, while the race to retain PGA Tour cards added weight to a low-scoring opener.

  • Zach Bauchou shot a bogey-free nine-under 62 to lead the Bank of Utah Championship by one shot.
  • Nine players opened with eight-under 63s at Black Desert Resort.
  • Jordan Smith made an albatross from 238 yards on his final hole.

Zach Bauchou birdied his final two holes on Thursday for a career-best 9-under 62 and a one-shot lead at the Bank of Utah Championship, earning his first 18-hole lead on the PGA Tour.

The rookie holed a 12-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th, then reached the 602-yard closing hole in two and two-putted from 25 feet. His bogey-free round also put him top of the field in strokes gained tee to green on a day when the average score was around 68.

Bauchou entered the week at No. 86 in the standings, with two top-10 finishes from 22 starts this season. The seven-event FedExCup Fall offers players the opportunity to secure their positions for next season, with only the top-100 at its conclusion in November retaining full cards for 2027.

“I felt like I spent some time the last couple weeks reflecting on the season. Felt like I played pretty solid most of the year, just didn’t have that many high finishes,” said Bauchou. “Just try to improve when I’m home and know that I am actually playing probably better than what my results are.”

Smith finishes with an albatross

Jordan Smith produced the most spectacular finish among the nine players tied for second place on 8-under. The Englishman holed a 30-foot birdie putt at the eighth before holing his second shot from 238 yards at the par-5 9th for an albatross.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever done it, so it was pretty special, and to end a round like that is even more special,” said Smith.

Sudarshan Yellamaraju was the first player to post 63, setting his career-low round on Tour. The Canadian began the week at No. 59 in the FedExCup standings, with a finish between Nos. 51 and 60 securing eligibility for the Signature Events at Pebble Beach and Riviera.

Kevin Streelman birdied six of his last eight holes to join the group on 63. He and Nick Dunlap were among three players in that group who began the tournament outside the top-100.

Taylor and Brennan open with 64s

Nick Taylor finished with a 50-foot eagle putt for a 7-under 64, continuing the putting form he showed for the International Team at last week’s Presidents Cup at Medinah. Team-mate Christiaan Bezuidenhout also opened with 64.

Defending champion Michael Brennan matched that score as he began his bid to become the tournament’s first successful title defender. A year ago, Brennan was heading to the Korn Ferry Tour before receiving a sponsor exemption into Utah and winning to earn his PGA Tour card. He returned this week as a two-time winner.

Jackson Koivun, unbeaten on his Presidents Cup debut last week, needed a late recovery to shoot 69. The 21-year-old made three consecutive bogeys and was 2-over before four birdies in his final five holes brought him back to 2-under, leaving work to do on Friday in such a low-scoring field.
