- Austin Smotherman won his first PGA Tour title in his 100th career start.
- Smotherman finished at a tournament-record 26-under 258 to beat Doug Ghim by two shots.
- The victory earned Smotherman a two-year PGA Tour exemption.
Austin Smotherman claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Bank of Utah Championship on Sunday, recovering from a back-nine double bogey to close with a 3-under 68 at Black Desert Resort. His 26-under 258 left him two shots clear of Doug Ghim and broke the tournament’s 72-hole scoring record.
The 32-year-old began the final round one shot ahead and never trailed. Two tap-in birdies and a 35-foot birdie putt at the par-4 5th quickly gave him a three-shot cushion.
“100 starts out here is an incredible number, just to be blessed to have 100 starts, but even more so, to play professional golf now for 10 years, travel the world, have the support I’ve had, it’s pretty unreal to lift a trophy at the highest level,” Smotherman said. “It’s something we’ve dreamed about since I was a kid, and here we are.”

Smotherman Responds to Bunker Trouble
Smotherman’s approach to the par-4 13th came up short and plugged near the lip of a bunker. His first attempt could only move the ball to a flatter lie in the sand; his next finished 10 feet from the hole. He missed the putt and made double bogey.
Trace Crowe, playing in the group ahead, holed a 40-foot eagle putt on the reachable par-4 14th. Smotherman’s lead was suddenly down to one.
Smotherman answered with a tee shot at the 14th that landed short of the green and rolled to six feet. He missed the eagle putt, but the birdie restored a two-shot advantage.
His approach at the next hole took a favourable bounce and again finished six feet away. That birdie chance went begging, too, before he converted from just inside 12 feet at the 16th to give himself a comfortable lead with two holes remaining.
A bogey at the 17th and birdie at the last completed his winning round.
“It didn’t have to be pretty,” Smotherman said. “I got some nice bounces. Made some poor swings, but this game doesn’t have to be perfect.”
Records and a Two-Year Exemption
Smotherman improved on Matt McCarty’s tournament-record total of 261 from 2024. He also set the event’s 36-hole and 54-hole records at 17-under 125 and 23-under 190, and led the field with 32 birdies.
His victory makes him the Bank of Utah Championship’s third consecutive first-time PGA Tour winner, following McCarty in 2024 and Michael Brennan in 2025. He is the ninth first-time winner on Tour this season.
Smotherman had also held the outright lead after both 36 and 54 holes at this year’s Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, where he finished tied second. That had been his best Tour result before Sunday’s breakthrough.
The win grants a two-year exemption and a place in the Championship Series beginning in 2028 under the Tour’s new competitive model.
Smotherman arrived in Utah at No. 79 in the FedExCup Fall standings, with the top-100 at the end of the series securing full cards for 2027. He leaves at No. 51. Players finishing Nos. 51–60 earn places in next year’s $20 million AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational.
Ghim and James Move Into Top-60
Doug Ghim closed with a 69 to finish alone in second place at 24-under, climbing from No. 89 to No. 58 in the Fall standings. It was his second runner-up finish in 192 PGA Tour starts as he continues to seek his first victory.
Ghim three-putted from 30 feet at the 13th and missed a six-foot par putt at the 15th before birdieing the final hole.
“Today was Austin’s day,” Ghim said. “I did everything that I could, and hopefully I’ll learn from some of the mistakes and be a little bit more comfortable next time. But always grateful.”
Crowe shot 66 and David Ford 64 to share third place. Crowe’s finish was his best in 46 Tour starts, while Ford earned his second top-10, both coming at this tournament.
Kevin Streelman and Ben James each closed with 67 to tie for fifth. James recorded his fourth top-five finish in six starts and moved from No. 66 to No. 59 in the Fall standings.
Luke Clanton matched his career-low round with a 9-under 62, the lowest score on Sunday, to climb from tied 26th to tied seventh.
