Tahoe Mountain Club (Old Greenwood), Truckee, California
$3,500,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 3

South Africa's Erik van Rooyen scored 16 points on the final day in the modified Stableford scoring system to win his first PGA Tour title in the Barracuda Championship with 50 points. He eagled the par-4 8th, fired six birdies and made a single bogey at the par-5 5th at Tahoe Mountain Club’s Old Greenwood Course.

Barracuda Championship 2021 R4

“It’s massive. It’s massive. It’s been a difficult sort of 18 months for me golf-wise. I haven’t been playing well. There’s been glimpses of it the last six months. But I haven’t been able to put four good rounds together. So I was well aware of the position I was in going into the playoffs [for the FedEx Cup], knowing that I’ve only got eight rounds left to make that cut.

“And to win here this week, I mean, under the conditions, you know, the pressure that I was under, I’m going to take so much confidence from this.”

Barracuda Championship 2021 R4

The tournament is the only event on the PGA Tour to use the modified Stableford scoring system where an albatross is worth 8 points, eagles are 5, birdies are worth 2 and pars score 0. A point is substracted for a bogey and double bogeys or worse cost 3 points.

Van Rooyen gains entry into next year's PGA Championship but not to the Masters as the Championship was held opposite the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Barracuda Championship 2021 R4

Van Rooyen moves up to 78th in the FedExCup standings, well within the top 125 who will earn spots in the Playoff after next week's Wyndham Championship.

“Obviously, this was, in my mind, kind of the next step for what I wanted to achieve. I’ve got big dreams and aspirations, and winning on the PGA Tour was certainly part of that. I’m really, really happy.

“I just stayed so patient. I saw that Andrew Putnam got off to a really, really quick start. He was 45 points pretty early on. And there’s really nothing I could do about that. I’ve got to put one foot in front of the next. And I did that. And then the eagle on eight was just a massive boost.”

Putnam eagled the par-5 2nd, made four birdies and two bogeys to ckose with 11 points and finished second with a total of 45 points.

“It was a dream start, birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie, and then just kind of hit the brakes and stalled out a bit,” said Putnam. “And just didn’t get it to happen those last few holes.”

Scott Piercy finished third after a final round 11 points to close with a 44 total, one ahead of overnight leader Adam Schenk who scored five points in the final round.

“It was unfortunate I didn’t have my best stuff today," said Schenk. “I didn’t play good enough to win. He made a lot of putts, didn’t really make many mistakes. And he just deserved it more than I did, for sure.”
