Argentine Emiliano Grillo started the day in a tie for fourth place but took the lead with an eagle at the par-5 2nd hole in the Barracuda Championship at Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Course. He leads by two points at 29.

The tournament is the only event on the PGA Tour to use the modified Stableford scoring system where an albatross is worth 8 points, eagles are 5, birdies are worth 2 and pars score 0. A point is substracted for a bogey and double bogeys or worse cost 3 points.

The winner will gain entry into next year's PGA Championship but not to the Masters as the Championship is held opposite this week's WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

“Left a lot of putts short today,” said Grillo. “It could have been really good out there. Hit the ball well. Kept the ball in the fairway. Gave myself chances for eagles on the par 5s, which is kind of the key for this format.”

American Adam Schenk scored 19 points on Friday with an eagle at the par-5 6th to lie in second place.

“Just really have been driving the ball really well the last couple of days. Make a few putts, hit a few wedge shots close. Take care of the par 5s. It's definitely out there for you.”

Overnight leader Joel Dahmen of the USA scored 10 points to take solo third place at 26 followed by compatriots Andrew Putnam, Scott Harrington and Scott Piercy at 25.

“I feel like my game's pretty good right now,” said Piercy. “Putter feels good. I feel like I've got control of my golf swing. Equipment's right. I've got to go put it together.”
