American Joel Dahmen fired eight birdies in a bogey-free round to take the lead with 16 points at Tahoe Mountain Club's Old Greenwood Course.

“It was the best I could have done today, probably. I made every putt. Yeah, it's tough at altitude sometimes. You don't really know what you're doing out here. It's all guess. With the wind blowing the way it was, I didn't have a number in mind or anything, but I hit some bad shots that turned out great, hit some good shots that turned out good, and my ball just found the hole today.

“I slapped one [a birdie] in pretty good on 16 I didn't deserve. Like a 40-footer up over a hill. Probably that one I didn't deserve, but when it's your day, it's your day, and hopefully we keep it going.”

Barracuda Championship 2021 R1

The Barracuda Championship is the only PGA Tour event to use the modified Stableford scoring system where an albatross is worth 8 points, eagles are 5, birdies are worth 2 and pars score 0. A point is substracted for a bogey and double bogeys or worse cost 3 points.

The winner will gain entry into next year's PGA Championship but not to the Masters as the Championship is held opposite this week's WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Germany's Stephan Jaeger was second with 14 points after eagles at the par-4 eighth and par-5 12th.

“Obviously, in this format eagles really catapult you forward, five points,” said Jaeger. “One was a 3-footer on eight. I hit it on the green and it was pretty short. The other one… I made like a 25-footer.”

Scott Harrington of the USA was third at 13 with compatriot Michael Thompson and Argentine Emiliano Grillo tied in fourth place at 12, and Canada's Roger Sloan in sixth at 11.
