Local favourite Jordan Spieth stayed bogey-free and carded a 4-under 66 on Friday at Colonial to take the solo lead of the Charles Schwab Challenge by one stroke.

“I'm in a good spot at a familiar place,” said Spieth.

Play had to be suspended for 2 hours and 26 minutes during the afternoon due to lighnting from nearby storms.

“I came out of the rain delay and I made a nice putt on 3, and really felt like I had a chance to birdie almost every hole on that front nine and even into the back nine,” said Spieth. “But I didn't swing it as well. I wasn't really completing it and it wasn't feeling great. I knew I was going to kind of have to manage my way around the golf course a little bit, and fortunately did a really great job of that.”

Spieth's recent run of form has resulted in seven top-10 finishes since missing the cut at the Farmer's Insurance Open in late January 2021, equalling his total in forty events over the previous two seasons.

Jason Kokrak fired a second consecutive 65 to move into second place at 10-under. Kokrak, 35th in the World Ranking, is playing with a 36-inch shaft on his putter this season.

“I was 190th in putting but I was a top five ball-striker, so I concentrated more on the putter as of late, and you know, it's been hot,” he said. “But you know, I still want to concentrate on the ball-striking. I've been struggling with the driver, so I think finding a driver this week that I'm comfortable with, it's gone a long way.”

First round co-leader Sergio Garcia produced one bogey at the par-4 6th and birdies at the 8th and 12th for a 69 and slipped back into a tie for third alongside Sebastián Muñoz (65) and Patton Kizzire (65) at 8-under.

One week after his triumph at the PGA Championship, Phil Mickelson carded rounds of 73 and 69 and missed the cut by one stroke.
