Jason Kokrak shot a 70 on Sunday to beat playing partner and local favourite Jordan Spieth to the Charles Schwab Challenge title by two strokes after firing five birdies and five bogeys to close at 14-under 266.

“They were definitely rooting for the guy next to me,” said Kokrak. “Both of us didn't have our A-game today. We grinded it out.”

Kokrak joins Bryson DeChambeau and Stewart Cink as the third player to win two PGA Tour titles this season following his win at the CJ CUP @ Shadow Creek in October.

He will move to fifth in the FedEx Cup and will likely head to the Tour Championship.

“All I try to do is to get better every single year,” he said. “It's not a flash in the pan.”

Kokrak credits his caddie, former Korn Ferry Tour player David Robinson, with improving his putting.

“Ever since we got together four years ago, I called him up and said, listen, this is going to be a good ride,” Kokrak said. “I'm a pretty good ball-striker and you're a great green reader. We'll make a good duo.”

Indeed, he's currently seventh in Strokes Gained: Putting after ranking 151st last season. His average in his previous nine seasons on Tour was 124th.

Spieth, who had made only two bogeys over the first three rounds and started the fourth with a one stroke lead, started off on the wrong foot with three consecutive bogeys from the 2nd hole. He birdied the 6th and 9th to make the turn in 1-over 36 but bogeyed the 15th and 18th to close with a 73.

Spieth has now had eight top-10 finishes in his last eleven starts, one more than over the last two seasons combined.

Charley Hoffman closed with a 65 to take a share of third place at 10-under alongside Patton Kizzire (67), Sebastián Muñoz (68) and Ian Poulter (68).
