Lucas Herbert carded a 68 for a final 19-under 265 to complete his wire-to-wire victory at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

Irish Open 2021 R4

"It's an unbelievable feeling. It's a bit fulfilling really, I feel like I was probably really at one of my low points in my life two years ago when I played at Lahinch in the Irish Open.

"I feel like I've done full swing and come back round and won the event. It's pretty satisfying and I'm pretty satisfied stood here right now.

Irish Open 2021 R4

"The more big events that you play the better. You get more comfortable in those so I can take some more opportunities when I do get those chances.

"I won in Dubai last year and how much that benefitted me winning the event rather than a top five or a top three. A win is so much more than a second place so I was mentally trying to keep that at the forefront of my mind today - a win is a lot bigger than just a good finish and I was proud to finish the way I did."

Irish Open 2021 R4

He started his final round with a one shot lead and extended it to three after sinking his ball from 15 feet at the second hole. He sent his tee shot at the 5th into the bushes for bogey then went right off the tee at the 7th before hitting a tree at the 8th. He managed to save par on both holes and reached the turn in 35.

He was joined at the top of the leaderboard by Francesco Laporta, who made a brilliant run of six birdies but found the water at the 18th and closed his round with a double bogey for a 69 to finish in joint fourth place at 14-under, missing out on a spot at The Open.

Irish Open 2021 R4

Herbert held his nerve and completed the back nine in 33 to beat Rikard Karlberg by three shots and Johannes Veerman by four.

Herbert is the second wire-to-wire winner this year following Bernd Wiesberger at the Made in Himmerland in May who held the solo lead after every round.

His second European Tour victory, following the 2020 Omega Dubai Desert Classic, earns him a place at the Open Championship alongside Karlberg and Veerman.

Karlberg closed with a 67 to finish at 16-under. Veerman held a share of the lead after a 25-foot putt at the 14th but couldn't keep up with Herbert and bogeyed the final hole for a 71 to finish third.

Irish Open 2021 R4

Shane Lowry finished T23 after playing a final round 66, his lowest of the week.

"I'm excited and looking forward to playing some links golf in Ireland here next week and looking forward to getting over to St George's on Monday.

"The week, it will be nice, obviously I'm there to defend. I'm there to play good golf and I'm there to finish as high up as I can and everything that goes with defending an Open is going to be there and it's going to be new for me so I'll have to learn quickly.

"I'll be fine I think. I'm used to having that kind of label on my head and it's fine. I'll just go there and be myself and play my own game and hopefully it's good enough to have a chance at the weekend."

Irish Open 2021 R4

Rory McIlroy played 73-74 over the weekend, finishing T59 at 2-under.

"I'm happy that I added the Scottish Open in just to get a feel for some links golf," he said. "I haven't played a links course in nearly two years. So it will be nice to get back on a links and get familiar with it again.

"I certainly don't feel as good about where I'm at compared to where I was after the U.S. Open.

"But I've got another week to get ready and prepare, and I obviously want to play well next week as well and have a chance to win. There's nothing better than preparing for a Major Championship by getting into contention the week before.

"But I need to work pretty hard on my game the next few days before heading into the Scottish Open."
