Frenchman Julien Guerrier made the best of the windy conditions and signed for a 67 to take the opening lead of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.

Andalucia Masters 2021 R1

"It was really complicated today. The wind was growing stronger on the back nine, I think it's going to stay like that all day. I had two bogeys on the score card, very few, and six birdies. It's good to have six birdies in these conditions.

"I was putting really well. We know with these firm greens, they are really quick, and with this wind it's very difficult. But I holed a few long putts on the first and the third, and after I hit a lot of greens in regulation. That was the key."

Guerrier finished third at last week's Accional Open de España, improving his chances of keeping his playing privileges. Having started the week 132nd in the Race to Dubai Ranking he moved up to 103rd with the cut off for retention provisionally set at 124.

"I think I'm more relaxed (after last week). I'm playing to shoot a low score, not save my card, that's the main thing. We work every day, improve our game and it's working at the end of the year."

One shot behind at 3-under lies last week's winner Rafa Cabrera Bello followed by another Frenchman, Romain Langasque, in solo third place at 2-under.

"I felt like I did everything pretty well," said Cabrera Bello. "If I were to highlight something, I'd say my putting was really good. I had a lot of testers – that's normal on a windy day with fast greens, except for one I made everything inside eight or ten feet. I felt that was the difference for me.

"It's already an intimidating course when there's no wind. With wind it makes it all that tougher, but at the end you just accept it is what it is. It's going to be hard, the wind will switch, you'll end up in some tricky spots. You know it's a different type of tournament where three pars in a row equals a birdie. That's what you have in mind and that's how I tried to deal with this course and other courses that are as tough as this one."

Seven players are tied in fourth place at 1-under including France's Raphaël Jacquelin who still had a hole to play when play was suspended and will return to finish his round early in the morning.

World number 1 Jon Rahm signed for a 78 and lies T107.
