Will Zalatoris (USA) and past champion Jason Day (AUS) moved into the lead of the Farmers Insurance Open on Friday when Jon Rahm (ESP) and Justin Thomas (USA), the overnight leaders, faltered.

"It's just tricky because there's a lot of poa annua out here," said Zalatoris. "You've got putts that you've got to play outside the hole from distances you're not really used to playing them out there. Really with the exception of Augusta, the greens are glass there, they're perfect. Out here you can get a little wobble here or there.

"I think really the two that I left out there today I just didn't commit to playing outside the hole. So I think that's something that definitely tomorrow, just commit to it and hey, if it bounces in, it bounces in; if it bounces out, it bounces out. I think making the birdie putt on 14 kind of righted the ship a little bit because I was pretty frustrated hitting two perfect shots into 13 and walking off with par."

Zalatoris signed for the day's best round, a bogey-free 65, while Day's was marred by a single bogey at the 12th for a 67 to reach 14-under.

"It's nice to be able to be in the position, but like every position that you get into tournament-wise, kind of feels new," said Day. "So it's nice to be able to know that I've done it on the golf course twice, not only in regulation but also in playoffs, but tomorrow's a new day and you don't know what's going to come. I've just got to kind of get a good rest tonight, get into it tomorrow and just be patient."

Rahm lies in a tie for third place at 13-under after carding a 72 that included a double bogey. Aaron Rai (ENG) carded a 68 to join him.

Justin Thomas slipped further down into a share of fifth place at 12-under after a 73. Tied alongside him are Sungjae Im (KR, 68) and Cameron Tringale (USA, 72).
