Laurie Canter opened with a double bogey at the par-4 1st hole but quickly recovered with a birdie and an eagle at the par-5 3rd before bogeying the 4th then producing three consecutive birdies from the 6th to make the turn in 33. He fired two more birdies and a bogey on the back nine to close with a 4-under 68 and take a share of the Investec South African Open Championship lead at 14-under.
“The golf course was a different animal in the wind,” said the Englishman. “It was so much fun to play and such a great test.
“I like seeing the course with wind because I think that’s how it’s meant to play.”
Canter won the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship last month and currently leads the International Swing standings.
South African Dylan Naidoo made two birdies and a bogey to close with a 71, ten more than yesterday, to move into a share of the lead.
“I felt like Tiger Woods out there. It was outrageous. I had crowds that were five deep following me,” said Naidoo.
“I’ve never experienced anything like this before. It was just like an overflow of emotion.
“I’m ready for everything the final round has in store.”
South African amateur Christiaan Maas sits just two shots off the lead after his 70.
England’s Marco Penge shot an eagle at the par-4 17th as well as four birdies and two bogeys to card a 68 and lies in third place at 13-under.
Amateur Christiaan Maas closed with a 70 for a share of fourth place at 12-under alongside fellow South Africans Darren Fichardt and Branden Grace who both shot 71s.
