Calum Hill started the day eight shots behind the lead at the Joburg Open and went on to fire ten birdies and two bogeys on Sunday to close with an 8-under 62 and reach 14-under.
Overnight leader Shaun Norris started the day at 14-under and made three bogeys and a double bogey at the par-4 12th to close with a 70 and join Hill in a playoff alongside fellow South African Jacques Kruyswijk who carded a 66 having made two bogeys.
All three parred the first extra hole at the par-4 18th before Hill once again parred for victory while Kruyswijk bogeyed and Norris double bogeyed.
This is Hill’s long awaited second DP World Tour title following the 2021 Cazoo Classic.
“It’s awesome,” said the Scot. “A little bit surprised there, I thought we were having to go again (to another play-off hole). And then (the lightning) is ridiculous so I don’t know what was going to happen but yeah, I’m delighted.
“It was a fantastic day and this is the cherry on top.
“Getting the birdie on the 18th was the only way I was going to have a chance. I got lucky with the bounce up the slope and made a nice five-footer and then it gave me a chance to have a go in this play-off.
“You never know how a play-off is going to go. I think that might be my first play-off ever so it’s nice to have a 1-0 record on that.”
South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli signed for a 63 featuring eagles at the par-5 5th and the par-4 13th as well as one bogey to finish fourth at 13-under.
