Australian LIV Golf winner secures U.S. Open spot at Oakmont

Plenty of LIV Golfers took part in U.S. Open final qualfiying this week but only one made it through to Oakmont

The U.S. Open is set to take place next week at Oakmont, but on June 2, professionals and Amateurs alike took part in final qualifying to secure one of the final spots available at the tournament.

Across ten qualifying sites, a number of LIV Golfers were seeking to secure a place at Oakmont next week.

Graeme McDowell, Harold Varner III, Tom McKibbin and Lucas Herbert were among the notables from the breakaway tour who failed to advance.

Sebastian Munoz, Peter Uihlein and Cameron Tringale are alternates for the third major championship of the year.

This means that across ‘Golf’s Longest Day’ – so called due to its brutal nature of playing 36 holes over a single day to secure qualification – only one player from the LIV Golf league sealed a U.S. Open spot…

Marc Leishman returns to the U.S. Open for the first time since 2022

Leishman was playing at Woodmont Country Club on Monday and secured one of the four spots available at the site.

He had to do it the hard way, however. Rounds of 70 and 69 were only enough to send the LIV Golf player into a 3-for-2 playoff.

After a wonderful tee shot on the par-3 sixth – the second playoff hole – Leishman just needed two putts to secure one of the qualifying spots. He missed his birdie chance, but tapped in to seal a first major appearance since the Open in 2022.

Leishman has enjoyed some decent results in the majors during his career, notably the Masters and Open Championship.

Across ten appearances at Augusta, he has three top-tens, while the Australian finished T2 at the 2015 Open. He also finished T5 in 2014 and T6 three years later.

Marc Leishman is set to take place in his first U.S. Open since 2022

This will be his 12th U.S. Open appearance, but he has yet to register a single top ten at the tournament.

His best finish was a tie for 12th at The Country Club in 2022. Earlier this season, the 41-year-old won his first LIV Golf individual title in Miami.

After seven events of the 2025 season, Leishman currently occupies 10th in the individual standings. With the eighth event taking place in Virginia this week, Leishman will be hoping earning a first major start in three years can give him a jolt of confidence.
