Kalle Samooja shot a course-record to win his maiden DP World Tour title in the Porsche European Open.

“It is truly special. It’s been a long journey. I’ve been close a few times.”

The Finn started the day seven shots behind the lead having carded 72-72-74 in the first three rounds but produced a bogey-free 8-under 64 on Sunday to reach 6-under and win by two shots.

“We had a number in mind today and we reached that. We thought it might be enough and it was a long two-hour wait at the clubhouse, seeing the guys battle it out.

“We were pretty sure that it was going to be a play-off or we might even miss the play-off.

“In the end, fo”rtunately it was enough.

With this win he earned his place in the U.S. Open Championship later this month.

“I’m really looking forward to the U.S. Open. One of my goals this year was to play more Majors.

“This qualifier gave me a chance to get in. When I knew we would get a spot I asked my physio ‘where are we going?’. Because I didn’t know where it was being played, but I wanted to play there. I’m really looking forward to that week.”

Dutchman Wil Besseling shot a 71 to take solo second place at 4-under.

Frenchman Victor Perez, who held the overnight lead, made two birdies and four bogeys to close with a 74 and a share of third place alongside England’s Richard Mansell who closed with a 70.
