Wyndham Clark saved par at the 18th on Friday, closing with an even-par 70 to clinch a one-shot lead at 7-under in the RBC Canadian Open.

Canadian Open 2022 R2

"Honestly I played really good. It was tough out there. It was windy, there was some tough pin placements. You guys have seen, these greens are very tough and you get into some tough spots where you have to be defensive even from 10, 15 feet."

"On 18 I unfortunately hit a poor shot into the green, but from a semi-plugged lie on a down slope probably the best shot of the week, at least for me. Really had no chance.

"And I would love to say I was trying to do what I did, but I was trying to punt a little bit out to the right and somehow how I came into the ball it like plopped up to the left and landed in the rough and trickled down to four feet and it was definitely the best save I've had of the year. It was pretty awesome.”

Defending champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, shot 68 for a share of second place at 6-under alongside Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick (70) and Americans Alex Smalley (67), Keith Mitchell (67) and Jim Knous (67).

"Overall it was a good score today," said McIlroy. "I scrambled well when I needed to. I didn't really take advantage of how well I hit it off the tee. But overall I felt it was, a couple under was a fair reflection of how the day went.

"The rough is very penal, the greens are tricky, the wind's up, it's drying out a little bit because of the wind. All of a sudden you've got a pretty testing golf course. "
