Rory McIlroy has successfully defended his title for the first time on the PGA Tour at the RBC Canadian Open. The Northern Irishman won in 2019 at Hamilton G&CC but the event has since been cancelled twice due to the pandemic.

He started the day in a tie for the lead with American Tony Finau and was tied at the top of the leaderboard with fellow American Justin Thomas at the 17th when Thomas missed a 10-foot par putt and closed with two bogeys for a 64 while McIlroy produced a pair of birdies for a 62 and a 19-under, 261 finish.

This was McIlroy's 21st win on Tour and his second this season following the CJ Cup @ Summit in Las Vegas last October. His 62 ties the lowest final round score by a winner on Tour this season.

"It means an awful lot," said McIlroy. "I feel like it's getting tougher and tougher to win on the PGA TOUR. Even, just look at the two guys that I played with today. I went out with a lead and had to shoot 8-under par to get the job done. So the depth of talent on this TOUR is really, really impressive. And going up against guys like JT and Tony and coming out on top, that's something to feel really good about.

"So super happy to get that 21st win, to defend, even though it doesn't feel like a defense because it's been so long. And then just to play in a final group like that with that atmosphere all day. I mean the fans here this week have just been absolutely unbelievable. Like so good and so cool to play in an atmosphere like that. Boisterous, loud, but respectful. It was really, really cool."

Finau also closed with a 64 and finished second at 17-under while Thomas had to settle for third at 15-under.

England's Justin Rose shot an astonishing 60 in spite of three bogeys courtesy of eagles at the par -4 1st and par-5s 11th and 15th.

Tied alongside Rose in fourth place at 14-under is American Sam Burns (65) followed by top Canadian Corey Conners in sixth at 12-under after closing with a bogey-free 62.
