Bud Cauley wins first PGA Tour Title in 239th start

The 36-year-old American secured a two-stroke victory at the RBC Canadian Open.

Bud Cauley

Bud Cauley fired seven birdies and one bogey for a 65 to win the 2026 RBC Canadian Open at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley on Sunday, finishing at 17-under 263 for a two-stroke victory over Matt Fitzpatrick. The win was Cauley’s first on the PGA Tour in his 239th career start at the age of 36.

“It was obviously playing difficult with the rain and the wind, the conditions were so much different today than they were the first three days,” said the American. “I feel like my game was in a pretty good spot, I was hitting some pretty good shots. I had a 3-putt there on 4, but was able to birdie 5 and kind of get it right back. I kept thinking the back nine had been pretty kind to me all week and I thought if I can just keep myself then until we get to the back nine I can make some birdies there.”

Cauley’s first PGA Tour win

Cauley’s previous best finish on Tour was third, achieved four times, most recently at the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge. He becomes one of only five players since 2015 to earn a first win after 235 or more starts, joining Adam Schenk (243), Chris Stroud (290), Greg Chalmers (386) and Alex Cejka (287).

His two-stroke margin was the largest at the tournament since Rory McIlroy won by two in 2022.

The win was Cauley’s second top-five in seven starts at the RBC Canadian Open, following a T4 in 2012. Victory qualifies him for this week’s US Open.

“So many events without getting a win,” he added, “but with everything that our family went through when I was out and then to have my first win when everyone’s here, just it kind of seems like perfect timing.

Fitzpatrick falls short of four-win season

England’s  Fitzpatrick, the highest-ranked player in the field in the Official World Ranking at No. 4, made an eagle at the par-5 18th as well as six birdies and two bogeys for a final-round 64 but could not catch Cauley. The runner-up was his fifth career second-place finish on Tour and his second this season after The Players Championship. Fitzpatrick entered the week with wins at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, RBC Heritage and Valspar Championship, seeking to become the first player since Scottie Scheffler in June 2025 to win four or more PGA Tour events in a single season.

Norway’s Viktor Hovland made seven birdies and two bogeys for a 65 and finished solo third at 14-under in his Canadian Open debut, his best result since finishing third at the 2025 US Open.

Open qualifying and Canadian honours

The RBC Canadian Open served as part of the Open Qualifying Series, with the leading three finishers not otherwise exempt earning spots in The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale (July 16–19). Cauley, Sweden’s Jesper Svensson (T4) and American Jackson Suber (T4) secured those places.

Defending champion Ryan Fox of New Zealand finished T8 at 12-under, falling short in his bid to become the fifth player since 1950 to defend the title. PGA Tour rookie Sudarshan Yellamaraju, who plays from Ontario, also finished T8 and claimed the Rivermead Cup as low Canadian, his third top-10 in 17 starts this season. Justin Matthews, 22, won the Gary Cowan Medal as low amateur after finishing T29.

Nine-time PGA TOUR winner Brooks Koepka withdrew before the final round with a hand injury.
