Troy Merritt shot at hole-in-one at the par-3 11th to take a three shot lead but bogeyed the next hole and parred the final six to close with a 5-under 67.

“The mindset will be make a few birdies, but don't give any away," he said of his strategy for Sunday. “Make them work to come and get us and hopefully it's good enough in the end."

Merritt's ace, from 219 yards with a 5-iron, was his first on the PGA Tour.

Merritt has won twice on Tour, at the 2015 Quicken Loans National and the 2018 Barbasol Championship and has had three top-10s so far this year.

Niemann became the first Chilean player to win on the PGA Tour at the Greenbrier in 2019, and started the week with four top-10 results this season.

Hank Lebioda (66), who tied the low round of the day with Scott Stallings, and Cam Davis (67) are tied for third place with Brandon Hagy (68) a further shot back in fifth.
