Joaquin Niemann and Tom Lewis are tied for the lead ahead of a crowded leaderboard in wind buffetted Detroit.


Rocket Classic 2021 R2

They each shot a bogey-free 69 to reach 10-under 134, one ahead of Troy Merritt (68), Chris Kirk (68) and Max Homa (65).

Overnight leader Davis Thompson followed up his opening 63 with a 73 on Friday, joining seven other players tied for sixth at 8-under.


Rocket Classic 2021 R2

Michigan native Willie Mack III, the APGA 2019 Player of the Year, shot a 73 and made his first cut on the PGA Tour. He is T63 at 3-under.

Phil Mickelson also just made the cut after a second round 69 as did Patrick Reed (72) and Bubba Watson (73).


Rocket Classic 2021 R2

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau was particularly dissatisfied with the wind that picked up on Friday and missed the cut after rounds of 72-71. The Rocket Mortgage ambassador declined interview requests after both of his round and the question of why he suddenly parted from long-time caddie Tim Tucker remains.


Rocket Classic 2021 R2

Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama had to withdraw prior to his second round following a positive Covid-19 test. It is unclear whether he was experiencing symptoms or not and what that could mean for his participation in the Open Championship.

A player who tests positive can return to competition in 10 days, as per PGA Tour rules, or sooner if there are no symptoms and consecutive negative tests, as was the case for Jon Rahm, who tested positive at the Memorial Tournament and was able to return before the 10-day period in preparation for the U.S. Open.

In theory, Matsuyama could then return in time for the Open but the R&A has strict Covid-19 protocols, including bubbles.
