Cam Davis wins first PGA title in playoff

Cameron Davis holed a 50-foot sand shot for eagle on the par-5 17th then birdied the 18th to close with a final round 67 joining Troy Merritt (68) and Joaquin Niemann (68) at 18-under 270 for a three-way playoff.

Niemann bogeyed the first playoff hole while Davis and Merritt played four more. Davis missed several birdie putts and both parred until the fifth hole where Merritt bogeyed and Davis won his first PGA Tour title.

“I hit some good putts, I hit some not-so-great putts,” said Davis. “But I had a lot of opportunities and I guess that was eventually what got it over the line for me, good solid quality shots in important situations. I'm really proud of that and that's a testament to some of the hard work we've put in.”

“It's still so surreal for me. I've been in some good positions before, but to play the golf that I played coming down the stretch was just awesome.”

Davis is the fourth Australian winner on Tour this season following Matt Jones at the Honda Classic and Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He also earned his ticket for the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis next month, his first time playing in a WGC.

Nieman has now finished second three times this year following the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Sentry Tournament of Champions where he also lost in a playoff.

Alex Noren closed with a 64 to tie for fourth place with Hank Lebioda (68) at 17-under.

Bubba Watson also produced a 64 to climb up the leaderboard and finish T6 alongside Brandon Hagy (68) at 16-under.
