January 21-24
PGA West Stadium Course &
Nicklaus Tournament Course, La Quinta, California
$6,700,000
Round 1, Round 2, Round 3

A year after he had to withdraw after the first round of the American Express because of persistent back problems, Si Woo Kim birdied his last three holes to close with an 8-under 64 and a one-shot victory over a late-charging Patrick Cantlay on Sunday.

"Every year, I've had a chance, but I couldn't make it," said Kim via a translator. "I had a lot of resolve in my mind last night. I took melatonin, but still I didn't sleep very well."

Kim kept a close eye on the leaderboard while he played as Cantlay shot a 61 to move up 13 places and broke the Stadium Course record by two strokes.

"I had to know what's going on, so I knew how to play my game in the final round," said Kim. "I knew Cantlay played really well. I tried to keep patient and believe in myself. I got the chance on 16 and 17, and that's when I could make it. I feel good about myself."

Cantlay's score gave him a one stroke lead but Kim birdied the par-5 16th then sank a 19-foot birdie putt on the 17th to regain the lead before closing with a par.

"I thought I would have a chance at a playoff," said Cantlay. "I played unbelievable this weekend. I did everything I could. Just going to be a shot short."

Kim and Collin Morikawa are now the only PGA Tour players under 26 with three career wins.

Overnight co-leader Tony Finau finished fourth, his third top-10 finish of the season, and his quest for a second PGA win continues.

"A couple of those guys just went really low today," said Finau. "I had some opportunities, I think, to shoot a number. But man, I'm kind of leaving today pretty encouraged. I played nicely."

Max Homa, who also led alongside Finau and Kim after the third round, made five bogeys and signed for a 76, finishing in T21 at 11-under.
