Louis Oosthuizen kept hold of the lead at 12-under heading into the final day in spite of struggling on the back nine at Royal St George's.

He made two birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 33 but bogeyed the 11th and 13th holes before firing a final birdie at the 16th to stay one shot ahead of Collin Morikawa.

Open Championship 2021 R3

“I was definitely not swinging it freely today, I was all over the place with iron shots and it felt like I kept it together at the end there,” said Oosthuizen.

“I’m very excited, it is a great position. I need to play well tomorrow and see if I can get rid of those loose swings.

Open Championship 2021 R3

"You need to believe that you can lift the trophy as well and if you think about it beforehand that you might win this championship, I think that's great, and you have to believe you can do it.

"Finishing second isn't great, so I will play my heart out tomorrow and see if I can lift the Claret Jug again."

Open Championship 2021 R3

Should Oosthuizen win on Sunday he would become the first wire-to-wire Major winner since Dustin Johnson at the 2020 Masters and the first at The Open since Rory McIlroy in 2014.

Morikawa lost some ground with two bogeys in his first five holes but back-to-back birdies at the 7th and 8th got him back on track. He made two more birdies on the back nine to reach 11-under.

Open Championship 2021 R3

"I've never been in the position all the previous other times. To be honest, you build a game plan and we see what we need to do all the way the tournament and I stick to it. That is exactly what I am going to try and do tomorrow.

"Obviously being in a final round at a major is different, but I'm going to try and keep it as similar as possible to every other tournament I've played.

"I think the biggest thing I can draw from the PGA is just knowing I can get it done. But I think confidence just comes from hitting good shots, quality shots, seeing putts go in. There is a lot to draw from, especially this week.

"I don't have much experience on links golf, and pretty much all the highlights in my head are from this week. Thankfully there is quite a few. Hopefully we can just use that momentum from the first three days and just bring it into the last 18. It's going to be a grueling 18, but I look forward to it."

Open Championship 2021 R3

Jordan Spieth got off to a great start with four birdies and a bogey on the front nine, tying with Oosthuizen for the lead. He fired one more birdie at the 10th, bogeyed the 11th and closed his round with back-to-back bogeys for a 69 and solo third place at 9-under.

Corey Conners made four birdies on the back nine for a 66 share fourth place at 8-under with Scottie Scheffler (69).
