Tommy Fleetwood fired a bogey-free, 7-under 63 featuring an eagle at the par-5 13th to reach 16-under and take a three-shot lead at 16-under at the Travelers Championship.
“I played very, very solid,” said the Englishman. “I suppose I’ve used every aspect of the game. I felt like certain elements — yesterday I had to scramble really well before things actually caught fire for me on the back nine. Today, hit the ball great off the tee. I didn’t really know the numbers but I hit every fairway, so that’s a really cool stat, that’s a really nice stat. I just had very much control of my golf ball, bogey-free today, so the odd sort of iffy shot I hit I made good saves, which are massive for momentum especially when you’re having a good day. It’s hard to pick just one thing and it’s funny how weeks can sort of sometimes come out of, not nowhere, I’ve been playing really well this year, obviously a disappointing week last week, and to do good work and to get back and feel like played well has been really nice.
“[I’m] always working on things. Things like chop and change a lot throughout the year. My driver’s just been spinning up a little bit. I drove it pretty well this year — actually drove it very well — but it was actually spinning up a little bit, like it just rose. Originally it was the mini driver shaft that I changed, I went back to the original shaft that I played last year, that’s always been such a strong club for me. New head this week as well, the R7 head, so that’s been great. And again we just ended up fiddling with some shafts, and sometimes it’s nice to have the opportunity to do that, sometimes those things come up and you can spend some time on it and, yeah, it’s been good. I probably only hit one driver today, or two drivers. I hit good drives. Mini driver’s been great. Yeah, those have been a nice change.”
194 marks his lowest 54-hole total on the PGA Tour (previous: 195/2018 BMW Championship/finish: T8)
Fleetwood seeks a first Tour victory in his 159th start. The seven-time DP World Tour winner has 41 top-10 finishes to his name so far, the most of any player without a win on Tour since 1983, including five runner-up finishes (most recent: 2023 RBC Canadian Open where he lost a playoff to Nick Taylor).
He holds the 54-hole lead/co-lead on Tour for the second time.
American Russell Henley carded a bogey-free 61, tying his career-low round on Tour, to move up into a share of second place at 13-under alongside compatriot Keegan Bradley who also stayed bogey-free and closed with a 63.
Henley seeks a second victory of the season and also second Signature Event victory (Arnold Palmer Invitational) and sixth career win on Tour. He would become the sixth multiple winner this season (Rory McIlroy/3, Scottie Scheffler/3, Ryan Fox/2, Ben Griffin/2, Sepp Straka/2).
Australia’s Jason Day made two bogeys and carded a 67 to stay in fourth at 11-under. He seeks a 14th career Tour win and first since the 2023 CJ CUP Byron Nelson.
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy made one bogey and one double bogey at the par-4 12 for a 68 and moved up into T8 at 7-under.
Also in T8 is Scottie Scheffler who started the day with a share of the lead and closed with a 2-over 72 having made five birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys at the par-4 1st and par-3 8th.
