Phil Mickelson missed the cut at last week's Valspar Championship but came back strong and produced eight birdies and a single bogey to take a 2-shot lead on opening day of the Wells Fargo Championship with a 63.

Mickelson hasn't finished in the top-20 in nine months and his 63 is his best score since the Travelers Championship last June.

“The biggest thing for me was I was able to say in the present and focus on each shot,” said Mickelson. “My mind has been prone to wander.”

Mickelson, currently ranked 115th in the world, last won over two years ago and has still not qualified for the U.S. Open.

“There's nothing physically holding me back from playing at a high level, but you cannot make mistakes at this level,” he said. “The guys out here are just so good, and I've been making a lot of errors, just simply not being mentally sharp.”

Bryson DeChambeau's round was marred by a double-bogey at the par-5 15th after his drive found a bunker and his following shot landed out of bounds. He rebounded with two birdies in his final three holes and closed with a 70.

Rory McIlroy, aiming to make the cut for the first time in two months, made two birdies and three bogeys and signed for a 72.
