Keith Mitchell found out last week that his putter was out of alignment after closing with an 82 and had it returned to the right specifications. He shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday to reach 9-under 204 and take a 2-shot lead in the Wells Fargo Championship.

“Some golf courses on the PGA Tour you can hit bad shots, get away with it and still try to make birdie,” said Mitchell. “You can't do that here. I think that's a true test of golf. I don't think golf would be fun if every course was like this. I just feel more comfortable around a tougher course.”

“I just feel like everything's really working. My driver feels great, and around this place you've really got to drive it well. Really just trying to keep the ball in front of me right now and see what we can do tomorrow."

Surging up the leaderboard behind him in spite of a double bogey at the par-4 12th after hitting the cart path, Rory McIlroy shot a 68 to tie for second.

“Just so cool to play in an atmosphere like that again,” said McIlroy of the return of spectators. “I've missed it. I didn't think I would miss it as much as I did, but I really have… I'm excited about tomorrow.”

Tied alongside McIlroy at 7-under is second round co-leader Gary Woodland. He signed for a 70 after a mixed round comprising of four birdies and three bogeys.

“It's a golf course that I am comfortable on,” he said, “and going into a final round tomorrow with a chance to win, I feel like I need everything I can get to try to get over the line. For me to be in contention for the first time in a while and for it to be here is probably beneficial.”

Bryson DeChambeau thought he'd missed the cut on Friday after a 3-over 74 placed him at 2-over total and boarded a private plane to head home to Texas. He received a message from his manager on his way south to let him know that due to the strong winds buffetting the course he had moved up to 68th place and made it to the weekend.

“Sure enough, conditions kept getting worse,” said DeChambeau, “and by the time I landed I was in 64th or 63rd or whatever. I looked at Connor (Olson, his manager): ‘Well, whoops, that was a mistake.'”

He made it back to Charlotte just in time for the third round. He shot five birdies and a double bogey at the par-4 18th for a 68 and is T23 at 1-under, 212.

“Very tired, yeah,” he said. “This morning was not easy. But, you know, for whatever reason I just feel like the more weird things happen to me, the greater my resolve sometimes can be and today was a case of that.”

First round leader Phil Mickelson double-bogeyed at the 9th and 17th and closed with a 76. He is 9-over for the last 36-holes and slipped down the leaderboard into a tie for 55th.
