Rory McIlroy shot a final round 68 to win his first title in 18 months in the Wells Fargo Championship in spite of his neck locking up during practice.

Wells Fargo 2021 R4

McIlroy held a two-shot lead when his drive at the 18th found a patch of deep grass near the water and his caddie Harry Diamond convinced him to take a penalty drop and he two-putted from 45 feet to close with a bogey for a one-shot win and his third Wells Fargo title.

“It's tough to get over the line, especially if you haven't done it in a while,” said McIlroy. "It's such a funny week, knowing my game was pretty good and then having my neck lock up on the range and sitting here Sunday night with the trophy."

“Just glad I got through it.”

Wells Fargo 2021 R4

McIlroy, who had not won since the 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai and had not made the cut in two months, was delighted to win his nineteenth PGA Tour title in Quail Hollow, where he also won his first in 2010.

“This is one of my favorite places in the world," said McIlroy. “To break the drought and win here, it's awesome.”

Wells Fargo 2021 R4

Abraham Ancer birdied the 15th, 16th and 17th and briefly tied for the lead then narrowly missed a birdie putt on the final hole to close with a 66 and finished second for the fourth time in his career on Tour.

54-hole leader Keith Mitchell began his final round with a two shot lead and started well with a birdie on the first hole. He struggled with his short game however and made back-to-back bogeys at the 5th and 6th, made one more birdies at the 13th and bogeyed the 17th to close with a 72 and a tie for third place alongside Viktor Hovland (67).

Wells Fargo 2021 R4

Bryson DeChambeau made made five birdies and two bogeys to close with a 68 and a tie for 9th at 4-under and retakes the lead in the FedEx Cup.

“Yeah, I wanted to make it worth it,” he said. “I didn't want to come out here and finish 60-whatever, close to last. Even at that, it's still FedExCup points, it's still world ranking points. I was pleased to have come back and finished – hopefully I can get inside the top-10 and be there and keep moving up the world rankings. The goal is obviously to be No. 1 and I want to be at the Olympics, so we'll keep moving forward in the right direction.”
