American Harris English shot a stunning 8-under 62, his lowest score on the PGA Tour, to take the first-round lead in the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

“It was one of those rounds where I was hitting it really good off the tee and making a lot of good putts.”
Harris has won four times on the PGA, including at this event in 2013 before it had World Golf Championships status and is still seeking a WGC win.

He started the tournament with some form, two of his titles having been won this season, the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January and the Travelers Championship in June as well as finishing third at the U.S. Open.
“Birdieing the first four holes is good all the time. It was just one of those rounds where you’re hitting it where you’re looking.

“Everything was working, you just kind of get in the zone. All you’re thinking are positive thoughts, you’re hitting good shots and hitting good putts so you just try and keep the gas pedal down.
“I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing. It’s my seventh time playing this course and this tournament so I feel I’ve got a good strategy.”
English ran into some trouble with bogeys at the 10th and 11th but recovered well with birdies on three of his final four holes.
“I’m just happy with the way I fought back,” he said.

English leads Americans Jim Herman and Matthew Wolff as well as Englishman Ian Poulter and Mexican Carlos Ortiz by two shots.
Poulter, who won the WGC-Match Play in 2010 and WGC-HSBC Champions in 2012, his last European Tour victory, stayed bogey-free as did Ortiz.
Americans Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler are tied in third place at 5-under alongside Australian Marc Leishman.

“I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend,” said DeChambeau. “I feel like I can be there to win on Sunday.”
