Max Homa fired ten birdies in a second-round 8-under 62 that also featured two bogeys at the par-3s 8th and 17th. He takes the BMW Championship lead by two shots at 10-under.
Homa’s 62 ties his career-low round on Tour (2022 TOUR Championship/R2) and his most birdies in a single round (2023 Sentry/R3). He also sets a new course record at Olympia Fields Country Club.
“Obviously I holed a lot of putts, which you have to do to make 10 birdies, but I was very proud of how I drove it. I felt like I was able to attack kind of all day. Obviously the greens are still really soft, so being in the fairway as often as I was, it felt like I was able to be aggressive when I wanted to, and if I didn’t, I could just play to the middle of the green.
“I felt that the tee ball set up everything. It was a major bonus to make as many putts as I did, but it was all really good. I think that out here when you’re in the fairway, it becomes significantly easier, more so than other golf courses.”
Fellow American Chris Kirk carded a bogey-free 66 to move into second place at 8-under.
England’s Matt Fitzpatrick shot a 67 and lies in a share of third place at 7-under alongside American Brian Harman (68).
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler of the United States hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation for the second consecutive round and ranks No. 1 in Proximity to the hole (23’ 9”), but ranks No. 41 in Strokes Gained: Putting (-2.315) and closed with a 69 for a share of fifth place at 5-under alongside compatriots Rickie Fowler (69) and Harris English (67) as well as England’s Justin Rose (65) and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (70).
