Yanhan Zhou signed for an impressive 8-under 62 having made an eagle at the par-5 9th as well as seven birdies and one bogey to take a one-shot lead at the Austrian Alpine Open.
“I hit it really good today, very solid,” said Zhou. “I only made one bogey, which is very nice and I made so many putts, I think I’m just a little bit lucky today.
“On my last hole, the ninth, I just hit a perfect three-wood shot and another perfect shot on the green. I holed a 30-foot putt up the hill and that was just my day.”
Zhou, who recently turned 18, is the youngest DP World Tour member this season. He has already won eleven times on the China Tour, seven of them last season to win the Order of Merit. His best result this season so far was a T3 finish at the Volvo China Open.
“I’m just here for normal things,” he said. “I’m the youngest player on the DP World Tour so I just want to play good golf.
“There are no goals for me, I just want to keep improving myself in the golf skills and the mindset.”
Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia lies in second place at 7-under having made a single bogey for a 63. He has had four top-10s this season but has yet to win on the DP World Tour.
“You have got to hit fairways to create chances, I did that,” said Gouveia. “When I missed the fairways, I was able to either knock it on the green and two putt or get it up and down.
“The difference was the putter. I holed a lot of good putts, that’s why my score was so low.”
England’s Brandon Robinson Thompson carded a bogey-free 64 featuring an eagle at the par-5 10th for a share of the six-way tie for third place at 6-under.
Scotland’s Marc Warren, playing in his 500th start on the DP World Tour, was presented with a silver salver by Austrian Alpine Open director Ben Groutage to mark the occasion.
