Matt Fitzpatrick and Michael Thorbjornsen Share Scottish Open Lead After Fog Suspension

The co-leaders face different workloads on Sunday after coastal fog delayed play twice, leaving 31 players within five shots at The Renaissance Club.

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship 2023 R2

Matt Fitzpatrick and Michael Thorbjornsen shared the Genesis Scottish Open lead at 11-under when thick fog suspended Saturday’s third round at The Renaissance Club.

Fitzpatrick had completed eight holes and Thorbjornsen 13. Both must return at 7 a.m. local time on Sunday to finish the round before the final round begins.

A sea haar, the local term for coastal fog, delayed morning play by almost two and a half hours. The leading groups did not tee off until after 6 p.m., and a second bank of fog ended play at about 7:55 p.m.

Fitzpatrick and Thorbjornsen Set the Pace

Fitzpatrick began one shot behind the overnight leaders and birdied the second and fourth after precise approaches, joining a five-player tie at the top. His 20-foot, double-breaking birdie putt at the sixth moved him ahead alone.

Kevin Roy briefly drew level, but Fitzpatrick got up and down for birdie at the par-5 seventh to regain a one-shot advantage at 12-under. He then failed to save par from a greenside bunker at the eighth, dropping alongside Thorbjornsen before the suspension.

The Englishman has won three PGA Tour titles in 2026, having ended the previous DP World Tour season with victory at the DP World Tour Championship. His record at The Renaissance Club includes a playoff defeat in 2021 and two other top-10 finishes.

Thorbjornsen reached 11-under without a bogey. He made long birdie putts at the second and eighth, then recovered from the trees to pick up another shot at the 12th. A 32-foot birdie putt on the 13th gave him a share of the lead, with five holes left in his round.

Johnny Keefer held the clubhouse lead at 10-under after seven birdies and one bogey in a six-under 64. Wyndham Clark was also 10-under through 15 holes, alongside Gotterup through 10, Roy through 16, Lee through eight and Smith through seven.

Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen completed a 65 to reach 9-under. Robert MacIntyre was level with him through nine holes, while Tom Kim also stood at 9-under through seven.

McIlroy Falls Five Shots Back

Rory McIlroy began Saturday tied for the lead with Kim and Smith at 9-under, following opening rounds of 65 and 66. Bogeys at the third and fifth were followed by another at the seventh, sending the 2023 champion back to six under.

McIlroy saved par from 20 feet at the eighth shortly before play stopped. He remained five strokes behind, with 31 players within five shots of Fitzpatrick and Thorbjornsen.

The co-sanctioned DP World Tour and PGA Tour event is the season’s second Rolex Series tournament and carries a $9 million prize fund.

Play is scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. Sunday. The final round will start no earlier than 10:15 a.m., using three-player groups from the first tee.
