Miyu Yamashita Takes Five-Shot CPKC Women’s Open Lead

Rounds of 62 and 64 carried the Japanese player to 14 under at Royal Mayfair, while three players share second place entering the weekend.

Miyu Yamashita of Japan hits her tee shot on the 18th hole during the second round of the CPKC Women's Open

Miyu Yamashita followed an opening 62 with a 64 on Friday to reach 14-under and establish a five-shot CPKC Women’s Open lead at Royal Mayfair.

“I’m really happy,” Yamashita said. “With two rounds to go, I just want to focus on my game and keep playing like this.”

The 25-year-old Japanese player began the second round one stroke ahead and then widened the gap during the afternoon. Players continued to contend with mosquitoes around the tree-lined course, which sits inside a bend of the North Saskatchewan River.

Yamashita Builds on Winning Form

The 4-foot-11 Yamashita has now posted rounds of 62 and 64 through the opening 36 holes, giving the field a target for the weekend.

She has focused on pursuing scoring opportunities rather than protecting her position on the leaderboard.

“Rather than focus on the score, I’m thinking about how I can make birdies,” Yamashita said.

Yamashita entered the tournament with three LPGA Tour victories since the start of last season. She won the Women’s British Open and Maybank Championship in 2025 before adding the Meijer LPGA Classic in June. She was also named the 2025 LPGA rookie of the year.

Romero Leads the Pursuit

American Kiara Romero shares second place at 9-under in her first event as an LPGA Tour member. The 20-year-old followed Thursday’s 64 with a second-round 67.

Romero became the second player to secure LPGA Tour membership through the LPGA Elite Amateur Pathway. Lottie Woad was the first to use that route last year.

“Honestly, I’m just really grateful to be out here,” Romero said. “I just came out here with the mindset to just go out and have fun and just enjoy it and just remember that it’s just golf at the end of the day.”

Soo Bin Joo and Yuri Yoshida joined Romero at 9-under. Joo produced a 63, while Yoshida signed for a 66.

Joo enjoyed Royal Mayfair’s setting, although the insects remained a persistent problem.

“I like this golf course. I love Canada. It’s so pretty,” Joo said. “All the trees are so pretty and I’m enjoying it, except for the mosquitoes. Gosh, it’s so bad.”

Ruoning Yin was one shot further back alongside Nasa Hataoka at 8-under. Yin closed with a double bogey to card a 67, while Hataoka recorded a 69.

Huang Sets the Canadian Pace

Seventeen-year-old Anna Huang was the leading Canadian at 7-under after a second-round 68.

Brooke Henderson, the tournament champion in 2018 and 2025, also shot 68 to reach 5-under and drew strong support throughout her round.

“I love this event,” Henderson said. “It’s so amazing and such a cool opportunity to be able to play in front of all the Canadian fans. They just show me so much love and support year after year.”

World No. 1 Nelly Korda remained at 3-under after an even-par 70. Lydia Ko, who won at Royal Mayfair as an amateur in 2013, shot 69 to reach 1-under.

The tournament is the final qualifying event for American players seeking automatic places on the Solheim Cup team. The matches will be played in the Netherlands from Sept. 11–13.
