- Casey Jarvis and Antoine Rozner share the Genesis Championship lead.
- Rozner shot a bogey-free 65 on Friday, while Jarvis signed for a bogey-free 67.
- Ryan Fox, Martin Couvra, Sanghun Shin and Filippo Celli are three shots back.
Antoine Rozner birdied two of his last three holes at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club to catch Casey Jarvis at the halfway stage of the Genesis Championship. The pair head into the weekend of the DP World Tour’s final regular-season event three shots clear of the field.
Jarvis had led by one after the first round. He added a bogey-free 67 on Friday, making four birdies and 14 pars, and set the clubhouse target on 10-under.
Rozner was out late in the afternoon and matched him with a flawless 6-under 65, one of the rounds of the day.
They arrived in Cheonan with very different targets. A third win of the season for Jarvis would lift him to second in the Race to Dubai. Rozner is currently 77th and needs a big week to keep his season going.
How did Rozner draw level?
Rozner started on the 10th. He holed a 44-foot birdie putt at the 13th, then picked up further shots at the 16th and 18th.
On his second nine he converted short-range chances at the 5th, 7th and 8th to complete a card without a blemish. It’s the second time since August that the Frenchman has a share of a DP World Tour lead at halfway, after he tied with Cameron Adam at the Danish Golf Championship.
“I think the two days were pretty similar in terms of ball-striking and scoring,” said Rozner. “I played pretty solid overall. I missed a few greens here and there, but my chipping has been really good this week so far. My putting inside ten feet is very solid as well.”
Rozner believes his season has been more consistent than his results suggest. He knows a strong finish here could change it.
Only the top 70 in the Race to Dubai after this week advance to the Play-Offs. Only the top 50 after the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship go on to the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. Rozner wants to play his way into that top 50.
“I missed a lot of opportunities throughout the season and I’m in the position I’m in,” he said. “Obviously, it would be a good bonus to play the Play-Offs, but in the position I’m in, I have to focus on winning the tournament. I can’t hide that.
“If I can keep up the good work this week, get into Abu Dhabi and then who knows what can happen. It can go really quickly. It’s what happened to me two years ago.”
Jarvis stays patient
Jarvis also began on the 10th tee and made seven straight pars before birdies at the 17th and 18th. Strong iron shots set up two more at the 3rd and 4th, and he parred his way home from there.
“I haven’t been taking on the flags too much and kind of just hitting it onto greens and trying to make the long ones,” said Jarvis. “I went bogey-free today, which is nice.”
The 23-year-old was playing in the same group as home favourite Si Woo Kim. He said he was enjoying the crowds that followed Kim, and the food: “The food’s unbelievable in this country as well.”
Two solid rounds fit the pattern of his season. Last year the South African finished just inside the top 100 in the Race to Dubai without a single top-ten. This year he won the Magical Kenya Open in February for his maiden DP World Tour title and won again a week later at the Investec South African Open Championship.
“When you get that first one over the line, I think everything just seems a little easier,” said Jarvis. “So I think once I won in Kenya, everything kind of changed, the whole mindset thing. I just felt like the pressure was coming off me, so I think that was the biggest change, and then obviously I’ve been putting a lot better than the previous season, which also helps.”
Heartache at the cut line
This is the last regular-season week, so the cut also settled Tour cards for next year.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat withdrew with injury, which means he will not keep his Category 10 status on the DP World Tour next season. Pablo Larrazábal also misses out and will head to Qualifying School next month.
Sebastian Söderberg came into the week 101st in the rankings. He missed the cut and is projected to drop to 103rd.
Sean Crocker survived. The American shot a level-par 71 to finish exactly on the cut line at 1-over. A good weekend would give him every chance of climbing from 103rd into the top 100.
“It’s tough to realise that I’m going to go back to Q- School in 12 days, in 11 days after 19 years without going to Q-School, but my dream job is to play the DP World Tour. It’s been for the last 26, 27 years. “Not too many people in the world can say that they have achieved probably 98, 99% of my dreams. But I think I have a couple more years of golf and I think I can still win golf tournaments. But for that, I’m going to have to prepare myself. “It’s tough to realise all these moments. I cannot put it into words, but you know, it’s going to take I have to recover myself. I’m very tired. As I said, I played nine of the last 10 weeks and I have to recover my old body to try to play six good rounds in Infinitum and to try to keep the dream alive. “I think I want to win one more. I want to win. I want to reach double figures and then 100% of my dreams will come true.” Pablo Larrazábal is remaining positive after his 19-year run on Tour comes to an end in Korea. #GenesisChampionship
