Australian Matt Jones played a final round 2-under 68 to win his first tournament in seven years by five shots at The Honda Classic on Sunday. His margin of victory tied the largest in history set Jack Nicklaus in 1977 and matched by Camilo Villegas in 2010.

“You can’t get a tougher golf course to win on than this one, in these conditions,” said Jones. “To be able to do that on this golf course is amazing and something I can build on for the future, hopefully.”

“It’s been seven years. It’s been a tough seven years. I’ve had ups and I’ve had downs, as all golfers have, but it gets me into a lot of big tournaments now.”

He is now eligible to play in the Masters next month as well as the Players Championship and 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions and moves to eleventh in the FedEx Cup.

Brandon Hagy, a late entry this week as an alternate, recovered from his third round 76 and produced six birdies and back-to-back bogeys at the 6th and 7th to close with a 66 and take solo second at 7-under, a career-best finish to celebrate his 30th birthday.

“There’s a lot of tough holes out there and there’s big stakes for sure, but I’ve been working on some good stuff and it’s nice to see some of that pan out,” said Hagy.

He was followed by Russell Henley (68), Denny McCarthy (67), C.T. Pan (70), Chase Seiffert (64) and Brendan Steele (65) who tied for third at 6-under.
