Lucas Herbert shot a 64, his lowest European Tour round since September 2019. He was playing in only the second group of the day and set the clubhouse lead of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at 8-under.

“Made a really long one on 18 for birdie and that kind of sparked things and got things going. Was able to play really nice that last nine holes.

“I felt like I was trying to get to five or six under and I didn’t really want to try and just attack really, really hard. It was just try and hit the ball in the right spots, give yourself some looks on the greens and I felt like if I could get to five or six under that would be a really good day. A few more rolled in and I got to eight.

“It’s a little bit tight in spots as well where you’re not taking driver and just sending it. You have to play to some positions.

“Second group out we were, the greens were unbelievable. I can’t remember putting on greens that nice.”

Herbert and Laurie Canter played in a two ball after Victor Dubuisson and Kristoffer Broberg withdrew from the tournament.

Herbert won his first title at the 2020 Omega Dubai Desert Classic and has had two top-10s since including at last year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

Johannes Veerman gave catching him a good shot and closed with a 65 to take second place with Forrest Grant a further shot behind in third place.

Fifteen players, including Nicolas Colsaerts, Tommy Fleetwood, Martin Kaymer, Thorbjørn Olesen and Andy Sullivan, are tied together at 5-under with another fifty five players within five shots of the leader.

Rory McIlroy closed at even par having shot three bogeys on his front nine and only three birdies for the round.

“I just didn’t feel like I did that much wrong. I just didn’t hole many putts for birdie, and it was just sort of one of those days. Overall, just a bit of no momentum going forward, and in the end, I did well to keep it at level par.”
