Sobron Galmes & Heath Share Aramco China Championship Lead With One Round to Play

The Spaniard is chasing a first LET title at 32, the English rookie a second in two months.

  • England’s Mimi Rhodes is alone in third place, one shot behind the leaders.
  • The final round at Mission Hills China begins at 7.35am local time, with the leaders out at 11.45am.

Spain’s Luna Sobron Galmes and England’s Charlotte Heath will take a share of the lead into Sunday’s final round of the Aramco China Championship, both on 16-under after 5-under rounds on the World Cup Course in Shenzhen.

Both began Saturday in the six-way tie for second behind Liqi Zeng. The 20-year-old made no headway on her 12-under total and now sits four back in a share of sixth.

Sobron chases a maiden title

Sobron’s 68 contained seven birdies and two bogeys. She birdied the 2nd, gave the shot back at the 4th, then went back-to-back at the 5th and 6th before adding another at the 8th. Birdies at the 10th and 11th followed, and a dropped shot at the 15th was recovered at the 17th.

The 32-year-old is still looking for her first Ladies European Tour title, and found the midday conditions in China tougher than those she is used to at home.

“This heat is too much! Mallorca is like this, but at these hours I am not playing,” said Sobron. “I like the course, I like the greens, I like that you can move the ball. I feel comfortable in this course and last week was a warm-up.”

“Of course I want to win. I am a player and a professional,” she said. “I’m waiting for this win, so maybe this week, maybe next week or next year. I’m doing good things, I’m playing good.”

Heath closes with three straight birdies

Heath was bogey-free, birdieing the 5th and 10th before three consecutive birdies to finish lifted her alongside Sobron. The rookie won her maiden LET title at La Sella in September, an event cut to 54 holes by storms.

“I felt like I should have been more under par sooner in the round, I was skimming the holes, but the putts finally dropped,” said Heath. “There’s a lot of low score that are going to come in, so I still need a good one tomorrow.”

“In La Sella, I think I played 29 holes one day and then took the next day off. It’s not nice for momentum. You just feel really uncomfortable all the time, this feels a lot nicer,” she said.

Rhodes one back

Rhodes, a three-time LET winner who shared third at the Wistron Ladies Open last week, was 4-under for the day. Birdies at the 2nd, 6th, 10th, 11th and 15th outweighed a lone bogey at the 13th, and she lipped out on the last.

“Solheim Cup has definitely helped me control my nerves,” said Rhodes, part of the European side that reclaimed the trophy at Bernardus. “I prefer coming from behind, so I’m excited for tomorrow and it’s been a while since I’ve been in contention.”

The chasing pack

Czechia’s Sara Kouskova, runner-up at the Aramco Korea Championship last month, is alone in fourth on 14-under after a bogey-free 68.

England’s Annabell Fuller, who shared the first-round lead with Heath, is fifth on 13-under after a 71. A Chinese quartet of defending champion Ruixin Liu, amateur Yujie Liu, 16-year-old Shiyuan Zhou and Zeng are tied sixth on 12-under.
