Nasa Hataoka was on brilliant form at Highland Meadows on Thursday. She fired ten birdies, six of them consecutively, for a career-low 61 to take the lead at 10-under.

Her previous lowest round of 63 was in the third round of the 2018 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, where she became a Rolex first-time winner.

“I didn’t feel any pressure on myself or didn’t feel way good. Everything was just right at the center, so I guess I would say it was the zone, yes. I was able to control everything .”

Her four-stroke lead is the largest first round lead since Tiffany Joh’s at the 2018 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open.

Hataoka’s is the lowest opening-round score on the LPGA since Hyo Joo Kim shot a 61 in the first round of the 2014 Evian Masters. She missed the tournament record of 60 set by Paula Creamer in 2008 by one shot.

“When I had my ninth birdie, it kind of did come to my mind, ” said Hataoka of carding a 59. “ But then after I only having two holes (to go), I just thought how great Annika (Sorenstam) was more than me getting it.”

Lauren Stephenson fired a bogey-free 65 to take second place, tying her lowest round of the year.

“I really like this golf course. I knew I wanted to take last week in Dallas off and be ready for this week because I feel like it sets up well for my game. I love the small greens and tree-lined fairways. I really enjoy it, and I feel like it sets up well for me. And then not having the fans last year, it’s really nice to have everyone back. ”

Last week’s runner-up Matilda Castren and Ariya Jutanugarn are part of a five-way tie for third place at 5-under.

Defending champion Danielle Kang carded a 70 and is tied for 44th.
