Englishman Danny Willett, who turns 34 on Sunday, signed for a bogey-free 66 at the Old Course to take a three-shot lead at 14-under in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

“Early on we had a decent bit of wind. Downwind you always feel like you should take some of your chances,” said Willett.

“You need to drive it close and as soon as you get on the 12th tee you know you’ve got pretty tough conditions coming straight into the wind on them last six holes.

“But we played them in two under so we’re gaining – really hit it good on them the last six and gained a lot of shots coming in doing that.”

Overnight leader Tyrrell Hatton had a round of two halves, firing four consecutive birdies on the front nine and three consecutive birdies on the back nine to sign for a 71 and a share of second place alongside fellow Enlighman Richard Bland, who signed for a 64 in a round that featured six birdies, an eagle at the par-5 5th and a bogey at the par-4 16th. Irishmen Shane Lowry and a bogey-free John Murphy both shot 67 to join them at 11-under.

Dane Jeff Winther (69), a bogey-free Swede Joakim Lagergren (67) lie one further shot behind in sixth place at 10-under.

Daniel Gavins started the day in second place at 9-under and fired six birdies over the first fifteen holes but closed his round with a bogey and back-to-back double bogeys to close with a 71 for a share of sixth place.
