Minjee Lee fired a 9-under 63 to take the lead at 14-under in the Cognizant Founders Cup. She holds the 36-hole lead/co-lead for the eighth time in her LPGA Tour career and tied her career-low round, which she has already recorded twice in 2022, in the fourth round of the HSBC Women’s World Championship and the first round of the Palos Verdes Championship presented by Bank of America.

“Hitting it close really helps you, like I said before, really just frees you up. Even with the short putts it’s just like a little more confidence boost, I think. And I did hole a few long birdie putts as well, so that was nice, to keep the momentum going.”

Lee made the turn in 32 thanks to four birdies in her first six holes then went birdie-birdie-eagle from the 10th. She carded two straight birdies from the 14th before dropping a shot with a bogey on the 16th.

The Australian, whose season average for putts per round is 29.63, only needed 23 putts to get through Upper Montclair.

“I’m really dialed in. That has always been my strength, my iron play, so I think in that aspect I was pretty confident before anyway, but I’ve been trying to work on my putting a little bit,” said Lee. “I know the numbers dropped a little bit there so I have a little bit more work to do, but been going pretty good this week.”

Americans Lexi Thompson and Ally Ewing both shot 69 and are tied in second place at 11-under alongside overnight leader Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden who carded a 70.

Thompson’s bogey-free 66 ties her lowest 18 holes of the season. “I put in the work back at home, put in the hours and the practice, so just coming out here and believing in myself and letting that show. It’s taken a lot of pressure off just going out there and relaxing. So going into the weekend, play how I have the last two days and see what that brings.”

Sagstrom fought back after bogeys on her second and fifth holes and carded four birdies to stay in contention.

“It feels good coming back under par. I was 2-over through eight holes, so, ‘I was like, okay, goal now, let’s get back to even par for today. I’m still in this,’ ” said Sagstrom. “I shot a really good round yesterday, but you don’t want to fall too far back in the pack. So just trying to get back and then if I can get a couple under, that would be perfect.”

LPGA Tour rookie Sanna Nuutinen carded a 4-under 68 to sit in solo fifth at 9-under.
