Justin Thomas started the day tied in seventh place seven shots behind overnight leader Mito Pereira and was even par at the turn after firing two birdies and two bogeys.

He made back-to-back birdies on the first two holes of the back nine and one more at the 17th to reach 3-under then missed a 10-foot birdie putt at the final hole and closed with a 67.

Chilean Pereira had held at least a share of the lead all day in spite of five bogeys but found the water and double bogeyed the 18th leading to a playoff between Thomas and fellow American Will Zalatoris that Thomas went on to win.

“I was asked early in the week what lead is safe and I said, ‘No lead,’” said Thomas. “I can’t believe I found myself in a playoff.”

Thomas' last victory came at the Players Championship fourteen months ago giving him a win in each of his last eight years on Tour.

Pereira had to settle for a tie for third place at 4-under after closing with a 75 alongside American Cameron Young (71).

“On Monday, I just wanted to make the cut. On Sunday, I wanted to win,” said Pereira. “I’ll take this to learn for the future."

England's Tommy Fleetwood carded a 67 to tie for fifth at 3-under with compatriot Matt Fitzpatrick (67) and American Chris Kirk (68).
