“Well, I made a nice putt on the first hole and just kept it going. It was really a fun day today playing with Adam [Scott]. It’s always great playing with Adam, but we both were playing really well, hitting good shots, making putts. It was a blast.

“I think on this course in particular if you hit the ball in the fairway, there’s a lot of opportunities. If you miss the fairway you’re kind of scrambling a lot of the holes. I did that today, hit a lot of fairways, and the ones that I missed I was able to manage.”

The American, who has missed the FedEx Cup finale for four years, matched a career-low 29 featuring six birdies.

He is currently 44th in the FedEx Cup rankings and needs to move into the top-30 to advance to the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

“I never look to see what I have to do because whether I play in this tournament or Sony or any tournament, I always want to do the best I can, whether it’s 35th instead of 36th or first, whatever it is. I never feel like that helps me, I feel like it hurts me actually. But this is a good start, obviously.”

Australian Scott tied for fifth in the first playoff event last week and continued his good form with a 65 on Thursday to move into second place at 6-under.

“[Bradley] played beautifully today, and I was really just trying to follow his lead,” said Scott. “He kind of had everything going the way he wanted, and most of the time he was teeing off first and I was just trying to follow.”

Americans Harold Varner III and Justin Thomas are tied in third at 5-under alongside Irishman Shane Lowry.
