Will Gordon was disappointed with his result last week in Bermuda but came back strong with an opening 9-under 62 that featured four straight birdies from the 10th, unfortunately followed by his only bogey, to take a one shot lead in the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.

Two years ago, Will Gordon lost his TOUR card in his rookie season.

Last year, he earned his way back through @KornFerryTour and now owns the solo lead @WWTatMayakoba.

“I just had an up-and-down week in Bermuda last week, played some really good golf for probably 68 holes and had a rough finish,” said the American. “So I didn’t really have many expectations coming into this week.

“It’s just really about managing my expectations and my emotions, so I feel like I did a good job of that today. Kind of let the round come to me and I putted it really well.

“This is my third time here and this is really the best it’s ever looked here. It looks phenomenal and the ball’s been bouncing. With all the rain we had yesterday and a little bit today, it’s playing pretty nice.

“I think primarily out here you’ve just got to drive the ball in play and I did a really good job of that especially through the first 14 holes. I was in a fairway almost every hole. Especially ball in hand today, you can — and the greens are soft, so you have a lot of opportunity to hit the ball close. And with the putter hot, it was a pretty smooth day.”

In second place at 8-under is a bogey-free Russell Henley followed in third place at 7-under by fellow Americans Scott Piercy, Sam Ryder and Harris English as well as Italian Francesco Molinari.

“I haven’t played as much golf the last couple months as I normally do, and the last few tournaments I’ve played I’ve been a little off,” said Henley.

“Just kind of taken some things that I did poorly there and working on them these last couple weeks and I feel like it’s gotten a little bit better. Just felt really comfortable out there today with my driver, which is big out here for me, a lot of intimidating looking shots. And rolled some putts in, too. So it was just a nice clean round.”
