Jeongeun Lee6 added her name to the all-time golf record book with a bogey-free 10-under 61 in the second round of the Amundi Evian Championship, tying fellow Korean Hyo Joo Kim’s first Evian round in 2014 for the lowest round ever at a major championship, male or female.

“I had a lot of birdie chances,” said Lee6. “I could play easily. My putting was really, really good, so, yeah, that’s it.”

Lee6 started on the back nine and made the turn at 4-under 32. She birdied the 1st and 4th then inked her name into golf history with a run of four consecutive birdies, including a chip-in from the greenside rough at the 8th, finishing her round with a birdie to reach 15-under.

Lee6’s 36-hole score of 127 is also the lowest 36-hole total in men’s or women’s major championship history, bettering Brooks Koepka’s 128 at the 2019 PGA Championship and the 129s by In Gee Chun at the 2016 Amundi Evian Championship and Louis Oosthuizen at the 2021 Open Championship.

She has previously shot a lower score in competition, setting the KLPGA Tour’s scoring record with a 60 in the second round of the 2017 OK! Savings Bank Se Ri Pak Invitational, earning the fourth of her six KLPGA wins.

“I try to keep it on the fairway and keep it on the green and I focused on putting speed,” she said. “That’s it.”

Evian Championship 2021 R2

Her caddie David Buhai said it best: “I caddied in a 9-under, but it was just in a small tournament. To do it under this, and every putt looked like it was going to go in. It was incredible. Not one nerve. Speed was just perfect,” he said. “I had the best seat in the house. And I just kept my mouth shut. I wasn’t getting involved because she was that focused. It was just incredible.”

Three shots behind at 12-under are Thai players Ariya Jutanugarn and Pajaree Anannarukarn.

Evian Championship 2021 R2

Jutanugarn shot her career-best round at Evian, ending with an eagle at the par-5 18th to close with an 8-under 63, the second consecutive day she has eagled her closing hole.

Anannarukarn also eagled the 18th to close with a 65, matching her score from Thursday’s first round.

“I didn’t change any strategy out there,” said Anannarukarn. “I stick to what I play the first round and, yeah, that worked out today. It’s all good.”

Evian Championship 2021 R2

2015 champion Lydia Ko shot a 65 on Friday to take a share of fourth place at 9-under. She is joined by 19-year-old American Yealimi Noh who shared the lead with Anannarukarn after the first round.

The cut came at 1-over par, with 77 players reaching the weekend.
