Jordan Spieth started strongly with a pair of eagles at the par-5s 2nd and 5th and closed with a 66 to reach 13-under.He was later joined by fellow American Patrick Cantlay to set up a playoff.

Cantlay found the front bunker on the first extra hole and sent his next shot 35 feet past the hole before missing his putt for par.

Spieth, also in a bunker, hit a 56-foot shot to 7 inches and made his par putt for the title.

"You have a lot of events where you feel like you should have won and someone outplays you or makes the putt or something, and a couple times you have one where you feel like you played good but not good enough to win, and I honestly felt like this was that week," said Spieth.

"I needed a lot of things to go right. I needed to birdie the 18th then needed some help, got some help, dodged a bunch of bullets coming in, and ended up in a one-on-one playoff where my lie in the bunker, although not great, was certainly better than Patrick's.

"I definitely felt like I was putting myself in the position hole to hole this week to win a golf tournament, and I just was having a hard time early in the week adjusting to the speed differences from last week.

"Then the hole started to look small to me yesterday, and then just came out today and said I'm not going to leave one putt short. And if they miss, they miss, and just try to be a little bit more aggressive, and made just enough to cap it and win."

Spieth's 13th PGA Tour victory was his second on Easter Sunday after winning the Valero Texas Open last year, his first title in four years. The next Championship to be decided on Easter Sunday will be the Masters.

Ireland's Shane Lowry, who was a stroke ahead of Spieth when the latter finished his round, double bogeyed the par-3 14th after finding the water and closed with a 69 at 12-under in a tie for 12th.

Tied alongside him are Australian Cam Davis who shot a bogey-free 63, Austrian Sepp Straka (68) and Americans J.T. Poston (bogey-free, 64), Cameron Young (66), Matt Kuchar (68) and overnight leader Harold Varner III (70).
