Harold Varner III shot eight birdies in a bogey-free third round to take the lead in the RBC Heritage by one shot at 11-under.

"I think having a clean card was really what I wanted to do, just give myself a lot of looks. I think I was able to do that a lot and executed some putts as well."

The American joined the PGA Tour in 2016 but has yet to win although he has had two international victories at the 2016 Australian PGA Championship and earlier this year in the PIF Saudi International. He was runner-up in last year's event.

"It was very gettable today," said Lowry. "There was a lot of chances out there. Yesterday was just kind of one of those days where you had to batten down the hatches and make pars and try and make the odd birdie when you could, but it wasn't a day for firing at flags or anything like that.

"Whereas today, I felt like any time you got a good number, you could really go at the flags, and I did, and I hit some good shots."

Overnight leader Patrick Cantlay carded a 70 and lies in a tie for second at 10-under. Tied alongside the American are Ireland's Shane Lowry (65) and South African Erik van Rooyen who shot a bogey-free 67.

"It had some good, it had some not so good, but I'm in a really good spot for tomorrow," said Cantlay. "Especially with that closing birdie on 18, get a little momentum, and I'm obviously right there.

"I think always finishing under par for the day is a little bit of a momentum builder. Glad not to stall out or go backwards."
