Sung Kang's opening round in the Shriners Children's Open wasn't flawless, marred by a bogey at the par-4 3rd hole, but he closed with an eagle at the par-5 9th for a 61 and a two-shot lead at 10-under in Las Vegas.

“Last few weeks I wasn't driving it very good, but my iron play was pretty sharp and my putting was pretty good. So I was just thinking if I can get my driver somewhere in play I could actually score better. And we figured something out on Tuesday and started driving it a lot better and I drove it quite better than last few weeks.

“We worked on a little bit of swing technique stuff. So I don't normally look at my swing with a video too much, I don't like to do it, but we started looking at it probably a couple weeks ago, so start fixing one thing probably every week. So we had some issues like probably five six issues and we're trying to take one out of play like every week. So we fix a couple things last week and then it's still sometimes not there, so we try to fix something else and it helped out. I was extending too much on the back swing, so I try to get my belly just more flexed and then down pointing more onto the ground and that just helped me hit it a little further and straighter.”

Fellow South Korean Sungjae Im produced a bogey free 63 featuring an eagle and five consecutive birdies on the back nine for a share of second place alongside Americans Charley Hoffman and Chad Ramey.

“It was one of those rounds where my good shots turned out pretty good and my bad shots I got away with a couple good bounces from errant tee shots that weren't really good that bounced back in the fairway then I made some good mid-range putts and I made all my shots that I hit pretty close,” said Hoffman. “So it was one of those rounds that I don't know if I could have really shot much lower, there was, I made a sloppy bogey on the drivable 15th, but besides that, I mean I really couldn't shave too much more off the round. I'm happy with what I did and I got the afternoon to figure out some ball striking things that I want to improve on.

Five players are tied at 7-under including American Matthew Wolff who lost in the playoff last year.

Only nineteen players in a field of 144 were over par, not unusual in Las Vegas as last year's cut was set at 7-under.

“You get no wind, you can start attacking this golf course,” said Hoffman. “It starts blowing 15 to 20(mph), it's a different animal.”
