Harris English and Kramer Hickok battled to the end for the Travelers Championship title but Harris ultimately won with a birdie at the eighth playoff hole following pars on the first seven.

Travelers Championship 2021 R4

This sets a new record for the tournament. The previous record of seven times had happened twice before when the event was called the Insurance City Open, in 1961 when Ted Kroll won and in 1962 when Bob Goalby did.

"It's hard to stay mentally into it and not to lose focus," said English. "But I tried really hard to stay focused and stay sharp and really be on my toes, because in a playoff situation in match play scenarios like that, you got ready for anything.

Travelers Championship 2021 R4

"I expected Kramer to hole every single putt, and just trying to stay in it. I felt like I fought pretty hard and had a couple chances to get it done, but finally after No. 8 we got it done."

The eight hole playoff also matched the second longest sudden death playoff in Tour history and had happened five times previously. The current record is eleven holes in the 1949 Motor City Open when Lloyd Mangrum and Cary Middlecoff agreed to share the victory due to darkness.

English was tied for the lead after the 17th but sank a 28 foot putt to close with a 5-under 65 and take the clubhouse lead at 13-under as Hickok was at 12-under with two holes remaining.

This is Harris' second title in 2021 following the Sentry Tournament of Champions and makes him the only player with multiple wins this year. He now moves up to second place in the FedEx Cup Standings.

"I knew I had to stay in it. I was tired. Back was getting sore a little bit," said English. "But I knew anything could happen. You've just got to grind out there. It was a good fight, and came down to somebody making birdie finally.

"I love being in that spot. I love being in the hunt of a golf tournament, and to come down the stretch and actually pull it off is an unbelievable feeling."

Hickok's runner-up finish is his best so far on Tour, he had previously tied for eighth in the 2018 Bermuda Championship.

Past champion Marc Leishman shot a 64 on Sunday and finished third at 12-under.

“It's a really fun golf course. You can give yourself a lot of chances for birdies, you can make bogeys from nowhere, it's just a hard place to lead,” said Leishman.

Bubba Watson, who was tied for the lead at the start of the day, was six over in his final five holes and finished T19 at 7-under.

“I'm glad that I was there, had the opportunity,” said Watson. “You know, I would love to do it again next week, throw up on myself again. It would it be great. I want to the opportunity and the chance to win.”

Dustin Johnson closed with a 71 and finished 25th at 6-under.
