Keith Mitchell backed up his career-low 18-hole score on the PGA Tour in the first round with a 3-under 67 for a one-shot lead at 12-under at the Truist Championship.
“Playing well the last couple Thursdays, it’s just I feel like I’ve been there now three or four times. So trying to just build off of that and build into Friday, then Saturday and Sunday. It’s a four-round tournament. They don’t give any points or money out on Thursday. So I’ve got to keep it going,” said Mitchell.
“I picked good targets today, so when I had some greens that I missed, I was trying to be below the hole or back into the grain. When you do that, you just have a lot better chance of hitting it close.”
The American leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (5.679) through two rounds. He entered the week 104th in Strokes Gained: Putting this season (-.007).
This is his third career 36-hole lead/co-lead on Tour and the first since the 2021 The CJ Cup @ Summit. He is 1-for-2 in converting to victory (Won/2019 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, T3/2021 The CJ Cup @ Summit).
Mitchell, who received one of four sponsor exemptions restricted to PGA Tour members this week, is playing in his twelfth start of the 2025 season and entered the week with top-20 finishes in his last four starts (T18/Texas Children’s Houston Open, T12/Valero Texas Open, T2/Corales Puntacana Championship, T18/Zurich Classic of New Orleans).
Ireland’s Shane Lowry posted a 65 and lies in second place at 11-under. He is one of two players with only one bogey through 36 holes (the other is Patrick Cantlay). He has had two top-10s in Signature Events this season (2nd/AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, 7th/Arnold Palmer Invitational).
One further shot behind after carding a 67, Austria’s Sepp Straka has recorded three top-10s this season including a win at The American Express.
2025 RBC Heritage champion Justin Thomas shot a second-round 67 in search of his second win in as many starts on Tour for the first time since 2017 (The Sentry, Sony Open in Hawaii). He is part of a six-way tie for fourth place at 7-under that include Rory McIlroy who also shot 67.
