After the opening round of the 2026 PURE Insurance Championship Impacting First Tee, Y.E. Yang held a three-stroke lead following a bogey-free 64 featuring eight birdies.
Yang’s 8-under total at Pebble Beach Golf Links left him clear of PGA Tour Champions rookie Ryan Armour, who opened with a 4-under 67 on the same course. Yang finished one stroke outside the tournament’s 18-hole scoring record of 63, most recently matched by Kenny Perry in 2017.
The South Korean entered the week 17th in the Charles Schwab Cup standings and is projected to climb to ninth if the current positions hold.
Yang carries strong form into Pebble Beach
Yang arrived on the Monterey Peninsula after finishing runner-up at the Rogers Charity Classic in his previous start. He closed with a bogey-free 63 in Calgary, including a 6-under back nine, before Steven Alker beat him on the first playoff hole.
That result came 17 years and one week after Yang’s three-stroke victory over Tiger Woods at the 2009 PGA Championship. His only PGA Tour Champions title came at the 2024 Stifel Charity Classic, where he defeated Bernhard Langer in a playoff.
Yang also has useful course form. He tied for fifth at this event in 2025 after beginning with a 4-under 68, but improved that opening score by four strokes this time.
Armour remains the nearest challenger in his first season on the circuit. The 50-year-old has finished tied third at the Sanford International and tied fifth at the Rogers Charity Classic in his past two starts. He began the week 44th in the Schwab Cup standings and is projected to move to 33rd.

Els and Johnson lead the chasing group
Four-time major champion Ernie Els opened with a 4-under 68 at Pebble Beach to share third place. Els is seeking his eighth PGA Tour Champions victory and could move from eighth to seventh in the season standings.
Zach Johnson began his tournament debut with a 3-under 69, one week after claiming his fifth victory of 2026 at the Sanford International. He is tied with Charles Schwab Cup leader Stewart Cink for the most wins on the circuit this season. Cink returned a 1-under 71 at Spyglass Hill.
Henrik Stenson and Alker each shot 3-under 69 at Spyglass Hill. Both are making late-season pushes, with Alker projected to rise from fourth to third in the Schwab Cup standings.
The event pairs 80 PGA Tour Champions players with 80 First Tee juniors and 160 amateurs. After 36 holes, the leading 12 male and 12 female juniors will advance to Sunday’s final round at Pebble Beach, where the top junior in each division will be crowned.
