Bernd Wiesberger started the day three shots behind the lead and fired seven birdies and two bogeys for a 5-under 66 and a share of the halfway lead at 12-under at the Volvo China Open.

Wiesberger won eight DP World Tour titles between 2012 and 2021, including the 2017 Shenzen International, but has not won since then.

“I didn’t play as well as I did yesterday with my long game so it was nice to actually get a round in that low because I didn’t feel quite as good as I did yesterday,” said the Austrian.

“But sometimes you get over those days and get a good score out of it and I did today.”

Playing for the first time since the Joburg Open in March, South African Shaun Norris made a single bogey for a 67 and his share of the lead. He started the season with two consecutive top-5s but has missed four of his last five cuts.

“It’s been pretty solid all day long bar a little blunder on the last hole,” he said.

“I can’t be more pleased with the way I’m playing the game at the moment and managing my game at the moment.

“I’m sort of hitting the ball in the right spots, missing it in the right spots and giving myself a lot of good chances so I’m happy with where I’m at at the moment, especially after a long break.

“Looking forward to the rest of the weekend.”

Local teenage sensation Yanhan Zhou, looking for his 12th win in a professional event on home soil, made four birdies and two bogeys for a 69 and is tied in third place at 11-under alongside compatriot Bowen Chai who made just one bogey in his 66.

Overnight leader Alejandro del Rey of Spain who shot an opening 61 on Thursday made two bogeys and two birdies for a 71 and slipped down into solo fifth place at 10-under.
