South Korea’s Haeran Ryu shot an 11-under-par 60 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Amundi Evian Championship at Evian Resort Golf Club. Her 19-under-par total of 194 after 54 holes equals the tournament scoring record set by In Gee Chun in 2016.
Ryu’s round is the lowest ever recorded in a major championship, in either women’s or men’s golf. It improved the previous women’s major record by one shot. The earlier mark of 61 had been recorded at Evian by Hyo Joo Kim in 2014, while Jeong-eun Lee6 and Leona Maguire matched it in 2021.
The result puts Ryu in position to claim consecutive major titles. She won the 2026 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine National two weeks ago, beating Ina Yoon by two strokes for her first major victory.
Ryu opened her record round with birdies on the second and fifth holes, and nearly aced the fifth with her approach. After using a hybrid off the tee, she then made eagle on the sixth with a 7-iron from 141 metres. Birdies at the seventh and ninth got her to the turn in 29, matching the best nine-hole score ever at the Evian Resort course.
She birdied the 10th before adding consecutive gains at the 14th and 15th. Another birdie on 17 brought a possible 59 into view, but her eagle putt at the last stopped just short. Ryu tapped in for birdie and signed for a 60 containing nine birdies and an eagle.
Ryu said she did not realise she was approaching a record while playing the final hole. “I didn’t know [about my score]. I just hit, so I didn’t know on hole 18, but after the putt I counted my score with my caddie and said oh my god, it’s 11-under-par today,” she said. “It was so amazing. I’m so happy right now.”
The eagle at the sixth came from a shot Ryu had not expected. “That hole [number six] is a little tricky to all players because it’s narrow and the green is a little hilly, so I wanted to make par on that hole,” she said. “The second shot was 141 metres and I hit 7-iron, thought it was pretty good and then it went in.”
Japan’s Aki Iwai is Ryu’s nearest challenger at 16-under after a 65 featuring eight birdies and two bogeys. Iwai played alongside Ryu and said the leader’s performance provided motivation. “It was really fun and I played with Haeran and she was on fire. She is a good inspiration,” Iwai said. Iwai missed the cut at Evian last year and described this week as a chance for revenge.
Brooke Henderson and Mao Saigo share third at 12-under. Henderson, the 2022 champion, shot 64 with two chip-in eagles at the par-5s holes 7th and 15th, six birdies and three bogeys. South Africa’s Casandra Alexander is fifth at 11-under after an 8-under 63, including four consecutive birdies from the 13th through the 16th. The Ladies European Tour Order of Merit leader made her only bogey on 17.
Lottie Woad began the day with a one-shot lead but fell into a tie for sixth at 10-under after a 1-over 72, alongside Jeeno Thitikul and Miyu Yamashita.
The final round begins at 8:40 a.m. local time on Sunday, with Ryu and Iwai in the leading group at 10:40 a.m.
